Meaning

Paywall conversion is a free serial becoming a paid one. The procedure differs by platform. On sites like Munpia and Joara, a work that clears certain thresholds (views, favorites, episode count) converts after the writer applies and the platform reviews it; on KakaoPage and Naver Series, contracted works go up in a paid structure from the start. After conversion the first 15 to 25 episodes typically stay free, and per-episode billing (usually 100 won) begins after that. The free stretch is called the "free episodes" and the first billed one "paid episode one".

Why it matters

Conversion is where a web novel turns from hobby into job, and most of the income is decided by read-through at the conversion point. If 50 percent of readers cross from the last free episode to paid episode one, then 5,000 of 10,000 free readers make a first purchase; at 90 percent retention per episode after that, the number is a fraction of that a hundred episodes later. That is why writers make the cut at paid episode one the strongest in the whole work and rework the episodes just before it. Timing is strategic too. Too early and the wall goes up before readers attach; too late and readers who read everything free leave. Platform convention is 15 to 25 episodes, but the more important rule is that the story's first big payoff must fall inside the free stretch.

End of 22: the protagonist clears his first dungeon and gets paid. — A payoff. A satisfied reader could stop here. End of 23: the association orders a re-measurement. — A question. Fine. End of 24 (last free): the re-measurement screen. A question mark in the rank field. — This cut creates the first purchase. Episode 25 (paid one): reveals what the question mark means, and the meaning opens a new crisis.

He moved the settlement scene from the end of 22 to the start of 23 and ended 22 on the association's notice, so the last three free episodes all end on questions.

Common mistakes

• A satisfying last free episode. No purchase follows an episode that ends on a payoff. The last free episode must end on a question.
• Slowing down at paid episode one. A disappointed first-time buyer does not buy twice. Paid episode one must be as strong as free episode one.
• Converting too early. If the first big payoff (usually around episodes 10 to 15) is not in the free stretch, readers hit the wall before the story has proven its promise.
